Nature
The Algarve’s natural diversity is one of its greatest attractions. From coastal regions to the Algarvian Mountains, visitors can find a range of nature attractions and there is a whole world of diversity to be explored throughout the region.
For example the beautiful Ponta da Piedade is located near Lagos. The erosion on the yellow rocks here is extreme, some even have natural arches. And if you look closely, you will see fossils of all kinds of marina animals and more in the rocks. Millions of years ago, this was the sea bed, but it was pushed up over the centuries, creating this rocks. Small boats depart daily from Lagos for a 45 minutes sailing between the famous rocks. You also can rent a canoe and sail yourself along and under the rocks. Around the sunset the soft sunlight makes the rocks extra red and yellow.
History
Lagos is a fascinating city that boasts a variety of history to be discovered. Monuments and buildings reflect its historical past, whilst visitors can also discover Lagos historical centre with its narrow cobbled streets, traditional houses and historical landmarks.
About two thousand years ago Lagos originated as a settlement of the Celts. Then the city came into the hands of various nations. The Moors left a big mark on this lovely coastal town when they conquered it in the 8th century. Lagos was renamed “Zawaia and grew into an important trading city. A castle and city wals were built to protect the city. Lagos returned to the Portuguese in 1249. A few centuries later, the city played an important role in the successful voyages of discovery. In the 15th century, this was the central point from which Portuguese ships wenst along the African coast in search o the sea to India. A famous resident of that time is Henry the Navigator.
